Early career women Journalists, broadcasters had been urged to prepare themselves for opportunities within the media industry. The opportunities, though myriad can only be annexed by those who have written goals, are pursuing these with a passion.
There is no shortcut to success and no one will ‘throw’ success across the window for you, you need to rise to the challenges and overpower them. That is how sustainable success is guaranteed and enduring. In addition to the above, participants were also charged and exposed to basic and advanced safety issues which can help in the course of discharging their duties.
The above and many other words of advice were given to selected early women in Journalism fellows of Africa Foundation for Young Media Professionals Women in Journalism fellowship 2024, South-South and South East zones in Nigeria.
As part of the activities for selected fellows in this fellowship, there is usually a 2-day intensive training which kick-starts the fellowship while the next three or four months’ activities are followed by mentoring, coaching and story publishing.

Some of the topics covered in this batch b project includes: Dynamics of investigative journalism, Gender mainstreaming, pitching, safety, privacy, women in newsroom leadership: maintaining standard, balance and well-being among others.
In this year, 97% of faculty and mentors are females who are frontline examples within the industry unlike other years where the setting is always around a 50-50 ratio of men and women.
The impact of this year’s program was huge and many of the majority considered by selected for this year fellowship was really an honour. This is in relation to quality of content shared, profiles of faculty and mentors, opportunity to network among others.
The two-day intensive workshop was held in Port Harcourt, River States between September 10-11, 2024 at Leadwort hotels along Airport road in Port Harcourt.
